The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a genome research institute primarily funded by the Wellcome Trust. The institute uses large-scale sequencing, informatics and analysis of genetic variation to further the understanding of gene function in health and disease and to generate data and resources of lasting value to biomedical research.

The Institute employs 800+ individuals across a broad spectrum of activities and in many different roles, including research and its associated technologies, core scientific facilities, IT, laboratory management and research administration.

The Institute receives a large and varied number of job applications, which are managed by a small internal HR team. Prior to deployment of an e-recruitment solution, the HR team used a paper-based system, manually processing large quantities of applications. This time-consuming process meant managers were not seeing CVs until the application closing date and candidates were not kept up-to-date with the progress of their applications. The Institute made the strategic decision to adopt an e-recruitment system to address the heavy time and resource back-office processing and alleviate disjointed communication between all parties both internally and externally.

Hireserve ATS went live at the Institute in August 2008. Since then the roll-out to both the HR team and wider internal community has been positive, thanks to the solution’s straightforward, easy-to-use approach. The management team is now able to see candidates’ CVs as soon as they apply. The HR team can now track each candidate closely, measuring timescales and making the whole process streamlined and efficient.

The system allows the Institute to provide a much better service to candidates, allowing them to follow and be informed throughout the whole recruitment process.  A recent survey regarding the Institute’s recruitment and HR processes confirmed this. In fact candidates had no negative feedback on the recruitment process.
